What does the body need selenium for?
The body cannot produce the trace element selenium on its own. It should therefore be consumed in sufficient quantities through food every day. Selenium is a key component of many enzymes that perform important protective functions in the body. In the form of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, selenium helps the body’s cells defend against free radicals. Selenium—like vitamins C and E—belongs to the group of so-called antioxidants, which bind free radicals and thereby render them harmless1 In addition, selenium is involved in the production of thyroid hormone and therefore contributes to normal thyroid function
Selenium intake in Central Europe
Since soils in Germany contain little selenium, natural selenium supplementation is recommended in cases of increased demand or an unbalanced diet. Germany is considered a region with a proven selenium deficiency. In many areas, selenium concentrations are lower because the pH level and oxygen availability are high, and the proportion of clay and organic carbon in the soil is low. In addition, climate change is further increasing the selenium deficit in the soil.7 Since this also means that foods contain less selenium, the risk of developing a selenium deficiency is increasing in many regions. The main dietary sources of selenium are nuts (Brazil nuts, coconuts), legumes, eggs, fish (tuna, sardines, halibut), meat (beef, chicken, beef liver), and mushrooms.
People with low blood selenium levels
The body needs selenium, especially during periods of high physical exertion and stress, in older age, and during pregnancy and breastfeeding. However, people often do not get enough of this important trace element. However, additional selenium intake is also recommended for people who consume little selenium in their diet (e.g., vegetarians) and those with an unbalanced diet. Low selenium levels in the blood can also occur if selenium is excreted in increased amounts or if selenium absorption is impaired. A blood test can determine selenium levels.&
Healthy hair also needs various minerals and trace elements to grow—one of which is selenium. Due to its antioxidant properties, selenium helps maintain normal hair4. The same applies to nails. They, too, must be regularly supplied with the micronutrient selenium to prevent them from becoming brittle5.
